About Callander Target Sports Club

Founded in 1909 when Field Marshal Lord Roberts found that the

Boers were better shots than the British Army during the Boer war.

Today the club is affiliated to the National Small-bore Rifle Association (NSRA), the Scottish Small Bore Rifle Association (SSRA) and the Scottish Pistol Association (SPA)

The benefits of these affiliations is that if you wish to hold a Firearms Certificate (FAC) for target shooting you must be a Full Member of a Home Office Approved Club. The NSRA is the national governing body for all Small-bore Rifle and Pistol Target Shooting in the United Kingdom, including Air gun Shooting.

The club has two multi-function ranges, with wheelchair access and can cater for handicapped shooters.

The main range measures 25 meters and is primarily used for .22 rim fire disciplines although it is officially approved for larger caliber weapons including black powder. This range is also utilized for .22 air rifle shooting and gallery type shooting, which is now becoming very popular.  We also have a small group who use this range for knife throwing.

The other range is a 10 meter air discipline range with electrically operated targets and is used by youngsters starting of in shooting as well as older established competitors.   Please note that the permissible caliber of air guns used in this range is .177.

We have access to an outdoor 50 meter and 100 yard range based in the Aberfoyle area.

Information for New Members

Rifle and Pistol shooting is a very rewarding sport that is probably the most equal of all competitive sports as it make no difference at all as to gender. Lady shooters do not need any special paraphernalia or concessions, or to be muscled like Arnold Schwartzennager  to compete with males.  In shooting it is about character and temperament not about who's strongest or tallest.  Membership of the Club is open to both genders   It may interest prospective lady members that we currently have female shooters.

Firearms legislation prescribes two categories of membership; these being –

Probationer and Full.

Probationer members are permitted to handle weapons and live ammunition but this will only be under the direct supervision of a full (Senior) member of the Club.

Full membership is only available to those who have satisfactorily completed the statutory 3 month probationer period of membership.

Application, to the Police, for a Firearm Certificate for target shooting will only be considered from a full member who has completed the 3 month probationary period.

A number of club weapons are available along with a range of shooting jackets, slings, mats etc for use by club members.   Suitable ammunition is also available.

The club provides a safe and friendly environment where members can learn the correct use of firearms for target shooting.  New members of all levels, ranging from complete beginners to experienced shooters, are welcome.

Many of our members participate in local club competitions and some of our ex-members now represent Scotland at National and International level.   In target shooting there is something for everyone and members and probationary members are encouraged to enter competitions when they reach a standard where they can consistently keep all shots within the scoring rings.

Rules of Callander Target Sport Club

Unless you possess a Firearms Certificate no ammunition can be taken from the club.
A .22 bullet is potentially dangerous and has a range of over 1 mile

Within the range the Range Conducting Officer (RCO) is in charge and his instructions must be observed and obeyed.

All members MUST obey the following safety rules:

  • The breech of a rifle must be kept open at all times other than when the rifle is being fired

  • A rifle or air weapon must not be handled while anyone else is forward of the firing point

  • A rifle or air weapon must not be loaded until everyone else in the range is clear and until such authority is given by the RCO

  • No one must move away from the firing point until all have finished shooting and the RCO has given the necessary authority

  • All rifles and air weapons must be checked by the RCO when a shooting detail finishes and before anyone moves in front of the firing point to ensure that the breech is open

  • Personal shooting equipment must either be removed from the premises or be stored within the armoury.  Weapons stored within the armoury should have the firing bolt removed

  • The internal range door must be closed whilst shooting is taking place with the warning red light activated

Accidents in rifle ranges are virtually non-existent. This is because the strict safety regulations are rigidly enforced throughout the sport.  Any member found acting in a careless or dangerous way will be subject to disciplinary action.
